Strike hits normal life in Far Western Nepal

  • Written by:

KANCHANPUR: The indefinite vehicular strike called by the public transport entrepreneurs has hit normal life in the Far-Western Development Region.

All long and short route vehicles plying from and to here have remained off the road on Friday. Passengers were left stranded in the roads and bus parks due to the strike.

The strike was called after the locals vandalised the office of Karnali River Transportation Company two weeks ago as two locals were killed in a traffic accident.

Now the locals have banned the Karnali River Transportaion Company owned vehicles to run along the Tikapur-Lamki road section.

Janak Kunwar and Bishnu Saud of Tikapur died on the spot after a motorcycle (Be.2 Pa. 5945) they were riding was hit by the Karnali River Transport bus (Na.4Kha. 9569) coming from the opposite direction at the Baliya road section of Kailali district on December 31.

Following the incident, the locals including the deceased family members have been demanding a compensation of Rs. one million each to the two families, and thereby obstructing traffic by resorting to vandalism in Tikapur area.

The bus entrepreneurs have said that they could provide Rs. 500,000 as per the law but the victim side is stuck to their demand of a double of the proposed amount. Various rounds of talks between the two sides have failed to give a positive result.

All the 14 bus entrepreneurs committees in the far-western region have called the vehicular strike demanding security and withdrawing the ban against Karnali River Transportation Company.
