Nepali female climbers to climb K2

Three Nepali female climbers are in a bid to set the world record by climbing Mt K2, the world’s second highest mountain, this spring season. It is also considered the hardest mountain to summit.

nepali-female-climbersAccording to Himalayan Women Welfare Society, experienced mountaineers Maya Sherpa, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa and Dawa Yangzum Sherpa will embark on their 90-day journey to K2 also known as ‘mountain of mountains’ on June 15.

If the ‘1st Nepali Women K2 Expedition-2014’ become a success, it will be the first Nepali female team of expedition to summit K2 (8,611m), world’s second highest mountain, Dawa Sherpa, a member of the organising team, said

After its first ascent by Italian climber 60 years ago, only eight women have successfully climbed K2.

According to Nima Nuru Sherpa, adviser of the expedition, the expedition is organised by Himalayan Women Welfare Society in coordination with Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Nepal Mountaineering Association, Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal and other other agencies.
